Amir Khan's trainer, Virgil Hunter, is happy that his fighter isn't the one facing Floyd Mayweather on May 3rd. That is because he believes that with another year of seasoning under his belt, Khan will have a better chance of beating “Money” should the bout take place.
Mayweather opted for Marcos Maidana as opposed to Khan for the Las Vegas card that takes place a week from Saturday. Khan will be facing tough Brooklynite Luis Collazo on the undercard instead. It will be the first fight at welterweight for Khan who will be coming off a long layoff.
"He has taken a year off and has really rested himself,” said Hunter. “He has rejuvenated his body and is looking in great shape.
"If we can get the best Amir Khan in the ring then everyone will be astounded at what he can do."
"I feel not getting the fight (Mayweather)was a blessing in disguise,” said Hunter. “Because I believe Amir will eventually get that fight.
"And, when that time comes, he will be much more ready to win that fight. I believe Floyd Mayweather will fight Amir Khan next year.
"By then, Amir will have another couple of fights and two or three more training camps. Having that advantage will make it more dangerous for Floyd."
Khan has also been signed by Al Haymon, who now advises both fighters. So any promotional roadblocks will be minimal in getting the fight made. Hunter believes that Khan, ten years Mayweather's junior, can defeat the man most consider to be the pound for pound best in the sport.
"Amir is getting better all the time and I see a lot of progress that he has made,” relayed Hunter.
"Anyone who writes him off is crazy because his ability is such that, if he brings everything together, he can beat him. He is competitive and dangerous for anybody - I don't care who they are. If he can continue to grow and mature and keep following the steps we have laid out for him, I expect him to be successful."
