Controversial strength coach Alex Ariza is predicting that Marcos Maidana has a surprise in store for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and will take the WBC welterweight title from him on May 3rd. Ariza, who was dismissed by Freddie Roach from Manny Pacquiao's camp, has been fully embraced by Robert Garcia in his Oxnard Boxing Club.
“Maidana is a very dedicated fighter,” said Ariza. “He's very responsible, so I trust him. Right now we are working on his speed, to get faster access to (throw punches in) his contest against Mayweather and it is best that we are now working with enough time to get him ready for May 3rd.”
Ariza thinks that Mayweather no longer moves around the ring as well as he once did. If he stands in front of Maidana, it will be to the benefit of “El Chino.”
“He isn't the same fighter he used to be. He stays in the pocket more, and he doesn't move as much. I think he's more entertaining now, but hopefully that will work to our advanteg,” Ariza said to esnewsreporting.
Maidana threw over 100 punches per round in his last contest when he upset Adrien Broner. His camp has the same goal in mind when they face Mayweather.
